Has anyone tried River Road Coffee, out of Baton Rouge? I’m curious. I just came across their website. They sell bagged beans and represent themselves as a specialty roaster of the highest standards. To me, though, their presentation doesn’t say “passionate roaster*” but it does say “sales and marketing team looking for a niche.” Maybe I’m wrong. Being slick isn’t a crime.
You can get the coffee at groceries in the Baton Rouge area. Albertson’s, Wal-Mart, and others. Does it have a roast date? Are they aiming at CC’s? Starbucks? Stumptown?
Comments and opinions welcome.
*Try Me Mills’ website seems more like roasters first, marketers second.

Re: River Road Coffee
Hard to imagine they’re a top-notch specialty roaster when they only seem to have blended coffees.

River Road is certainly a decent coffee, and much more to my liking than most of the other Louisiana grocery store coffees — Community, French Market Café du Monde. Their medium-dark _Creole_ is the one I prefer most of the various blends I’ve tried. I found their coffee/chicory blend a little too intense, but, perhaps, right in line with what you find for sale most places in New Orleans.
Baton Rouge really does have a quality roaster named Highland Coffees right outside the gates of LSU on Chimes St. Their beans come from most corners of the globe, and they do offer a few blends too. They have a nice site from which you can order roasts. Give Clarke Cadzow a call & he can tell you what he’s roasting that day.

Just found this site, and hope to find recommendations for good roasters/shops down there. I’m still looking for that perfect cuppa Joe.

I second everything S. Baird said. I worked at a place whose coffee was supplied by River Road– we served their creole blend, and it was tasty, but hardly artisinal.
Highland Coffees, on the other hand, is an awesome roaster. I just moved to nola from BR, but I plan on continuing to get my beans from Clarke.
